Danish/Estonian collaboration opens Tallinn International Festival, Jazzkaar

Tallinn International Festival, Jazzkaar is running from 21.04 –30.04, 2017.
The festival is the biggest jazz festival in the Baltic states. Even though Jazzkaar is running on one of the smallest budgets in the North the festival have plenty of activities and events, including a free concert day, this year on 23th of April, were artists will perform in Telliskivi Creative City and its surroundings. At this day music will be played at different places from bars, coffee shops and even office spaces. Furthermore as a part of the festival you can experience home concerts in which musicians will have the chance to perform in local homes.
The tradition of home concerts started back in 2015 where the Finnish drummer Tatu Rönkkö performed in numerous family’s kitchens.

At this years opening, which takes place Friday, April 21st, at Vaba Lava, Kira Skov and Maria Faust will perform pieces from their collective created album “In The Beginning”. The album should be officially released May 12th.

Kira Skov is from Rødovre (Denmark) and has for several years been an established part of the danish music scene since she started her solo career. To date she has released 11 studio albums, traveled the world for many years, performed with a bohemian Rock ‘n Roll band and worked with big names in the music business.

Maria Faust is from Saaremaa (Estonia), but she is living in Copenhagen. She is a saxophone player and composer. Faust music stretches from third stream jazz and modern big band elements to free improvised music and alternative rock and electronica. Faust is in many ways a rising star in the experimental jazz genre.

In 2016 the two went on a journey together in the southern regions of Estonia.
At their homepage; https://kiramariainthebeginning.com/ it is said about their journey that “they came upon a cultural universe of vanishing songs and chants, while unearthing long-buried stories of loss, surrender, submission, faith, doubt, and forgiveness.”

Their journey together has made the framework for the album “In The Beginning.” It is inspired by the regions many narratives and the many layers of psychology these histories contains.

The opening performance, the free concert day, home concerts and so much more, can be experienced at Jazzkaar in the following days. You can check out for more information at: http://www.jazzkaar.ee/en/program/

The concert by Kira Skov and Maria Faust is organized in collaboration between The Danish Cultural Institute, The Danish Embassy in Estonia and Jazzkar
