Northern Lights Nordic-Baltic FF 2019
Northern Lights Nordic-Baltic Film Festival in Belarus is an annual event that offers the most recent and inspiring films from Northern Europe and Baltic States. In the language of the cinema, the films of the festival tell about life peculiarities of five member states of Nordic Council of Ministers, as well as three Baltic States. Altogether, the festival presents films from Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
The 5th Northern Lights Nordic and Baltic Film Festival took place from May 10-17, 2019.
Northern Lights Film Festival provides an outstanding industry platform for communication between film professionals and enthusiasts in Belarus. Next to the main program the festival also organizes workshops for Belarusian professionals and screens more films, both fictions and documentaries, in additional programs throughout the year.
The 5th Northern Lights Nordic and Baltic Film Festival announces a new motto — “Everything is possible”, that is focusing on unbounded possibilities of a person in this world and belief that opportunities are available for everyone who is looking for them. The present mission of the festival is to inspire Belarusians to move forward, to smile and to listen to themselves.
During the festival week 18 fiction and documentary films, a retrospective, children program “Zzya-kids” as well as 7 industrial platform events will take place. The entire program was selected specifically for five-year anniversary in order to correspond with the concept of this year “Everything is possible”. Besides, a huge part of the program consists of documentary films, and exactly a half of the films of the main program is made by women.
Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is a constant partner of the Northern Lights Film Festival with a purpose to foster the development of the independent film industry in Belarus, introducing locals to the Danish culture and innovative methods of the filmmaking, raising awareness on the socially important and underrepresented in Belarus topics, to talk about them openly, find solutions to conflicts, hold a discussion from a win-win position and to respect one another.
With a screening of a Greenlandic movie Anori (2018) the festival was opened on the 10th of May! The next day an open lecture about cinema and culture in Greenland and how cinematic art looks like in such a small country took place, which was represented by the actress Nukâka Coster-Waldau. “Anori” appears to be the first full-length picture in Greenland, which was directed and produced by a woman!

May 11 – The Reformist – Female Imam (2019) by Marie Skovgaard
May 13 – Holiday (2018) by Isabella Eklöf. “Holiday” screening was followed up by an open talk on the topic of domestic violence and discrimination of women with the director Isabella Eklöf and Belarusian anti-violence activists and specialists.
