Nordic Days bring a diverse cultural experience to Daugavpils
The annual Nordic Days take place in Daugavpils this year, offering a rich programme of events, including movie screenings, exhibitions and concerts, running throughout the month of October. The events are aimed at promoting the Nordic countries and their culture, establishing mutual contacts and strengthening regional cooperation between the Nordic and Baltic regions.
The Danish Cultural Institute contributed to the Danish cultural footprint by arranging a concert on the evening of 15 October by the jazz quintet “Barkmann with Strings”, a quintet consisting of talented musicians from the renowned “Randers Big Band”.
Trumpeter and bandleader Jeppe Barkmann, trombonist Storm Kleist, bassist Jesper Carlsen, guitarist Mads Jensen, and drummer Jakob Marker took the stage at Daugavpils’ main cultural venue, Vienības Nams, before an enthusiastic audience. For an hour and a half, the concert hall resonated with spectacular music, featuring everything from contemporary renditions of Danish folk tunes to jazz classics and some of Barkmann’s own compositions.
After a long and standing ovation, a reception was held, where guests could enjoy even more jazz – from the brilliant, local ensemble “Daugava”, whom Barkmann and his quintet later joined for a jam session to the enjoyment of all guests.
We would like to extend our gratitude to Vienības Nams and the Nordic Council of Minister’s Office in Latvia for helping this incredible event come to fruition, and we hope to be able to welcome “Barkmann with Strings” back to Latvia in the future.
During the rest of October there are many more cultural events to enjoy. The full programme (in Latvian) is available here: https://norden.lv/en/whats-new/news/nordic-days-in-daugavpils/
The Nordic Days are organised by the Nordic Council of Ministers in Latvia, the embassies of Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden, and the Danish Cultural Institute in cooperation with Daugavpils City Council, Augšdaugava Municipality, Daugavpils University, the Rothko Museum and other institutions.
